School board elections are often overlooked yet they are very important. The school budget makes up a sizable chunk of most municipal taxes that burden residents. This year, Seton Hall CRs is proud that one of their own, Matt Gilson, will be seeking a seat on the Board of Education in his hometown of Rutherford. The election, to be held April 20th, will be for three seats. None of the incumbents have indicated yet whether they will seek election. He has cited a need for smarter spending and an end to failing programs as his main reasons for running. Let us all offer whatever we can to our fellow CR in his campaign, this is a great opportunity to show that CRs can make a difference.

The final cost for CPAC comes to $90 per person. We cannot pay for the hotel rooms until you have paid your portion of the rooms because we need to have the money in our account before we can get final authorization to book the room. Please pay Rickey Santussuo (richard.santosusso@student.shu.edu) as soon as possible. We would like to book the hotel rooms next Monday, so try to get us the money before then. If you are unable to pay the $90 before then, please contact myself or Rickey asap so we can try to work something out. As a reminder, you are responsible for your registration fees, which you should have already paid, as well as food, drink and any transportation fees you incur in DC itself (mainly the Metro). Also, the plan is to carpool to DC and back. Expect to leave Seton Hall Wednesday, Feb. 17th and return Saturday, Feb 20th.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank you for working harder than any other College Republican chapter in the state.

From the beginning of the semester I have asked a lot of you and you have come through more than I ever imagined. We, as a chapter, made 13,000 phone calls and did $1,600 worth of $50 Get Out The Vote (GOTV) shifts.

That is an unprecedented amount of work for a College Republicans chapter which happens to be located in a town that went 7,228 to 1,568 for Obama last year. The final numbers have yet to come out for the Village of South Orange, but I guarantee you that YOU made a dent in that number this year.

As Chairman, my job description is to motivate and energize… you made my job easy. I gave you a list of goals and you smashed every single one of them. I asked for 10,000 calls, I got 13,000; I asked for 2 or three kids to do paid GOTV shifts, I got 8; I could not be more thankful for that effort.

The difference in this election (as of now) is 104,000 votes. Look at it this way, you reached out to 15k of them. That’s about 14.4% which is an incredible impact for one organization.

So, once again, thank you for being the most incredible CRs in the state. Thank you for working harder than Ricky and I even imagined in our wildest dreams. Thank you for proving to everyone that Seton Hall DOES have an active group of Republicans.

Most importantly, thank you for being a KEY FORCE in the election of our next governor, Christopher J. Christie.

Sincerely,

Gary La Spisa, II

Chairman, Seton Hall College Republicans

“The Cartel” is a documentary that takes us inside some of New Jersey’s worst public schools to answer the simple question: why do we pay so much for failure? See how schools give up on students, good teachers are silenced, and New Jersey taxpayers get fleeced. From their website:

“These are real children whose lives are being destroyed,” director Bob Bowdon explains.

The Cartel shows us our educational system like we’ve never seen it before. Behind every dropout factory, we discover, lurks a powerful, entrenched, and self-serving cartel. But The Cartel doesn’t just describe the problem.

Balancing local storylines against interviews with education experts such as Clint Bolick (former president of Alliance for School Choice), Gerard Robinson (president of Black Alliance for Educational Options), and Chester Finn (president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute), The Cartel explores what dedicated parents, committed teachers, clear-eyed officials, and tireless reformers are doing to make our schools better for our kids.

Hey all,

As I mentioned at our last meeting, the Conservative Political Action Conference is something you should all keep in mind. Last year, I had a blast at CPAC. It is a great chance to get free stuff, hear conservative leaders speak, and have fun. Conservatives from around the nation will descend on DC for the three day event, and hopefully you will consider joining me in DC February 18th-20th at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel.

Last year, speakers included House Minority Leader John Boehner, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, Vice President of the NRA Wayne La Pierre, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Commitee, Senator John Cornyn, Congressman Pence, and Rush Limbaugh, just to name a few.

Additionally, Gary and myself have been working hard to find tours that we can bring members of our chapter on while we are in DC. Hopefully we can secure a tour of the Capitol Dome, but other options include tours of the White House, U.S. Capitol Building, Library of Congress, or Supreme Court. I cannot request these tours, however unless you are willing to travel to DC and are committed to attending CPAC.

If you are interested in attending CPAC, registration is $25 for students. It’s a real bargain because it normally costs $175 to register. I encourage everyone who is interested, to register early. When details about the conference’s speakers become available, I will let you all know who will be speaking. You can register and get more information at http://www.cpac.org If you do decide to register, and would like to attend a tour, please let me know ASAP with proof of registration and what kind of tour you would prefer. Please note, however, I cannot guarantee a tour, but I will do my best to set you up.

We are not sure if this will be an official SHUCRs event yet, as we are looking for a faculty advisor to chaperone us if we go as a club. If you would like more information, feel free to contact me with your questions.

Sincerely,
