Dear Friends,

The Seton Hall University College Republicans proudly support Kathleen Donovan in her bid to become the next Executive of Bergen County.

In a time when families throughout Bergen County are suffering from the worst economy in America in decades, taxes are on the rise, burdening Bergen’s tax payers with ever larger bills from municipalities, the county and state. With the Obama Administration and the Pelosi-Reid Congress’ decision to allow the Bush-era tax cuts to expire, the pain of higher taxes will be even greater for everyone.

Elected leaders across the country, from the municipal and county level to the federal government, have been taxing and spending for far too long. Many politicians raise taxes; few cut them.

Kathe Donovan is the one candidate in the race for Bergen County Executive who has proven she can do more with less money. In her twenty-two year tenure as County Clerk, she had found ways to save Bergen taxpayers’ money each and every year. As Executive she will partner with municipalities to eliminate redundant services, saving money and resources.

While many counties and municipalities are raising taxes to cover budget shortfalls, Kathe has pledged to reduce both taxes and spending while still providing the same, exceptional levels of services that Bergen’s citizens are used to.

With the nation’s slow economy and high unemployment effecting Bergen’s citizens and making it difficult for the county’s new college graduates to find jobs, Kathe will target and direct development in order to provide employment opportunities where they are needed most.

The ability to spend taxpayer money responsibly and efficiently is desperately needed in the County Executive’s office. As County Executive, Kathe will work to cut unnecessary administrators in Bergen schools, reducing bureaucracy and providing more funding for use in the classroom.

Kathe has proven her ability to run an ethical Clerk’s office, and, as Executive, the Seton Hall College Republicans are confident she will fight for comprehensive ethics reforms and the end of the Pay-to-Play policies of the McNerney administration.

As college students, we witnessed a presidential candidate sweep into office with the aid of the young vote and the promise of change. Where President Obama has failed Kathe Donovan can and will deliver. Kathe has consistently provided change to Bergen’s citizens as Clerk, and she will continue to provide change as Bergen’s County Executive. Please join with us as we work to provide real change to Bergen County.

Sincerely,

Brenden Higashi

Chairman, Seton Hall University College Republicans

Dear Friends,

The Seton Hall University College Republicans are proud to announce our support of Roland Straten for Congress in New Jersey’s 8th Congressional District.

With our endorsement of Straten, we join with the New Jersey College Republicans and the College Republican National Committee to demand that the Obama administration and United States Congress end their fiscal irresponsibility. College Republicans nationwide are stepping up, telling Members of Congress, the United States Senate and the Obama White House to stop putting “their debt on our tab.” To Congressman Pascrell, we say “Don’t Your Debt On Our Tab.”

Pascrell has “served” New Jersey’s 8th District since 1996. In that time, he has voted consistently with Democratic leadership to increase the size government, to increase taxes and to increase spending, setting our nation on an unsustainable path. Should Americans continue to send legislators like Bill Pascrell to Washington, D.C., America could very well become the next Greece. America is, in fact, not “too big to fail” as Democratic leaders have told us.

Pascrell’s votes for bailout programs, stimulus packages, and Obamacare, among others, have increased our national debt and budget deficit to unseen levels. In the past year along, Obama and Pelosi, with Pascrell’s support have increased the national debt ceiling by its largest one-time increase in history and expanded the federal deficit to record levels. With national debt fast approaching $13 trillion and the release of an Obama budget that will double that debt in 10 years, it is time to send real change to Washington.

Roland Straten embodies change. As a small businessman, Straten knows that budgets ought to be balanced and creating surpluses, rather than driving us deeper into debt. Straten stands for smaller government with less regulation, so that businesses may flourish and set us on a path towards true economic recovery and sustained growth. Straten knows that true recovery and job production lie in the private sector, rather than in the public sector. He would vote for the repeal of Obamacare and push for more individual freedom, choice and ownership in insurance options. Straten supports increasing the supply of energy through maximizing existing resources in environmentally friendly ways while promoting the use of renewable energy sources. Straten believes the future of America lies in our children and supports education reforms that will help make the American education system competitive with the rest of the world once more.

As College Republicans, we know that the future of America is in our youth. We have watched as a president who promised “change” as a candidate has failed and has given us more of the same, failed big goverment policies and so-called solutions that have failed throughout our nation’s history. It is time we demand that current leaders stop saddling our generation, and our grandchildren’s generation, with their debt. It is time we bring real change to Washington, D.C. by sending candidates like Roland Straten to Congress, those who will help to ensure that the America their generation hands to our generation is every bit as great as when they received the reins.

Sincerely,

Brenden Higashi
Chairman, Seton Hall University College Republicans

Schiff points out the noted “crowd out effect” that you may have learned about if you’ve taken a macroecon course.

Basically, there is only a limited amount of money that people in an economy are putting out to lend (just like there are only so many houses or cars on sale). The more the government runs a deficit, and has to borrow, the less lendable money there is to go around for everyone else.

Essentially, the government “crowds out” private interests who could have used that borrowed money to start up new businesses, expand their production, create jobs (ahem)… etc. Check it out:

The more money government spends, the more resources it drains from the private sector. The fiscal 2011 budget proposed by President Obama contains $3.8 trillion in federal spending… The proposed fiscal 2011 federal budget contains “only” 2.4 trillion of taxes.

The remaining 1.4 trillion of spending is borrowed (incredibly, for every dollar the government collects in taxes, it now spends almost $1.60). I would argue that a dollar borrowed kills more jobs than a dollar taxed. Therefore, cutting taxes and borrowing the shortfall kills more jobs then it creates. This is true because jobs require capital and government borrowing more directly crowds out private capital investment than taxes do.
