My earliest exposure to Republican values came from lessons I learned from my grandfather and father (as well as fights with my liberal mother). After years of listening to my father and grandfather talk about the skyrocketing taxes (particularly here in New Jersey) and the obnoxious controls levied on the average person by the government I was firm in my beliefs as a Republican before I entered high school.

During senior year of high school I volunteered to knock on doors for Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll (R- Morris Township). For those of you who do not know who that is, he is the most conservative member of the New Jersey Assembly. Assemblyman Carroll consistently fights for the principles of liberty and freedom every day in Trenton. Unfortunately for all of the citizens of New Jersey, no matter how right he is there are just not enough votes to stop the obnoxious liberal agenda in Trenton.

Before I volunteered for Assemblyman Carroll, I already knew that I was interested in politics. Throughout high school I had been involved in the Junior Statesmen of America (JSA) which is a nonpartisan debate and model government club with chapters in every state and Puerto Rico. Being in JSA, where so many students were liberal and naive about the world around them, forced me to learn how do defend the conservative viewpoints I had ben raised on. I did manage to win numerous debates defending conservatism and liberty, but more often than not the liberalism of the average student would control the debate, rather than the facts.

During the summer between Freshman and Sophomore years at SHU I obtained an internship with the re-election campaign for Congressman Rodney P. Frelinghuysen (R- Morristown). Frelinghuysen, a moderate, is very popular with his constituents year after year he wins by substantial margins, but this doesn’t mean that the campaign was not run seriously. Our goal was to improve our own campaign strategy so that we could help contribute to John McCain’s presidential bid, we put a large focus on our own GOTV (Get Out The Vote) efforts to turn out Republicans in force for McCain.

After being exposed to the inner workings of a campaign, I determined that campaign management would be the career for me. But more importantly, I had the chance to hear from insiders about the wasteful and controlling policies of the government. Exposure to the insiders of the Morris County GOP allowed me to hear from legislators, freeholders and council-members who were tired of the continued power grabs by the liberals who control New Jersey. The more I heard about these policies, the further right it drove me as I found more and more that is wrong with the liberal statist agenda.

For anybody who wants to know more about conservative principles, I reccomend reading Mark Levin’s book Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto.
